The continent of Africa represents one of the most serious health crises in the world today. Millions of children go to sleep every night with empty stomachs! Men and women everywhere suffer from debiliating infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, yellow fever, parasitic infestation and the dreaded scourge of HIV/AIDS. Many of these countries also face a double burden of disease with lifestyle related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Consider the following statistics: the African region has 24% of the total disease burden in the entire world yet has only 3% of the health workers, spending less than 1% of the world health expenditures. 36 of the 46 countries in Africa have major shortages of health workers. The future seems dark and foreboding to many people and yet LIGHT has a vision to drastically improve the situation by conducting over 20 one-month LIGHT schools in 2011 and establising at least five six-month training centers. This ambitious project will start in January, 2011 with over 30 volunteer missionaries conducting 11 simultaneous one-month programs in:

• Congo
• Tanzania
• Kenya
• South Africa
• Zimbabwe
• Botswana

Let me share with you an inspiring story from Leon Curfs, the coordinator for LIGHT's work in East Africa, that illustrates the impact these trainings have...

Fleeing their war-torn country of Sudan to hopefully find rest and relief elsewhere, Tabitha Nyaziel and her family settled in Kenya.  Tabitha learned about the LIGHT-Kenya school run by Pastor Leon Curfs and his wife, Irene, and started attending classes.  As she learned more about health and wellness, she also learned more about her Saviour Jesus Christ and about the seventh-day Sabbath.  She eagerly shared her new insights at home.  Her mother, a pastor of another denomination, grew so interested in the Sabbath that she scheduled a visit with the Curfs to further study these things.  Another issue also bothered her—long-term stress and instability had wracked her stomach with ulcers and no amount of money or doctors’ visits had helped.  Could they possibly help her?
  Irene shared some health counsel about ulcers and gave Tabitha’s mother some simple herbs and cabbage-carrot juice.  Her mother tried some oil-free food, which is advisable for ulcer patients.  Upon returning home, her son, who ran the household when his father was away, urged her to continue these simple, inexpensive treatments.  He could see that they were very effective.
  The Lord richly blessed and within days she told the Curfs that the ulcers were not bothering her at all.  Truly divine power accompanied with natural remedies produces supernatural results.  In addition to physical healing, Tabitha’s mother took home some material on the Sabbath, and she wants to have another visit with Pastor Leon and Irene to further study it.

Our plans have been carefully laid. Our hosts eagerly anticipate the arrival of our teams! Around 500 people are registered to participate in the 1 month trainings. But, we have a problem - we still need $35,000 to buy the airline tickets needed for the trip. Please prary and consider making this project a reality by donating today.
